Barbara Sandonato

The Sandonato School of Ballet was founded by Barbara Sandonato in 2006. Ms. Sandonato trained in the School of American Ballet under George Balanchine in New York City. When the Pennsylvania Ballet formed in 1962, she left New York and was the first dancer to join Barbara Weisberger in her new company. She remained Principal Dancer with Pennsylvania Ballet until 1977 except for a one year stint with the National Ballet of Canada where, as a principal, she performed with Rudolf Nureyev. She has made guest appearances with numerous companies including Wisconsin Ballet, Boston Ballet and the Eglevsky Ballet. She and her late husband Alexei Yudenich won a bronze medal at the Fifth International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria.

About the School

The school currently offers year-round pre-professional and pre-ballet training with a focus on developing strong classical technique. Each semester consists of 20 or more weeks of training with introductory levels starting with 3 or more classes per week and advanced students averaging 10 or more.

Performance experience is considered of primary importance to the education of each student and so each semester ends with a production. Some of our previous performances have included George Balanchine's "La Source", George Balanchine's "Valse Fantasie", "Graduation Ball" and Wilmington Ballet's Nutcracker.

Alumni have gone on to perform with such companies as the Pennsylvania Ballet, American Repertory Ballet and  more.

Our current faculty also includes:

  • Gabriella Yudenich, Soloist, Pennsylvania Ballet
  • Michael Paterson, former Corps de Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet
  • Bryan Matluk, former faculty Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and Eglevsky Ballet
